Methamphetamine: The Basics / Working With & Supporting People Who Use

We thank everyone who participated in the live webinars and those who have been waiting patiently for the webinar recordings. We apologize for the delay but are excited to share the recordings from our webinar series in July about Methamphetamine. Please see the descriptions below.

Part 1 – Methamphetamine: Basics

Click here to access the Part 1 recording

Part 2 – Methamphetamine: Working with and supporting people who use

Click here to access the Part 2 recording

Resources mentioned in the webinars can be downloaded from the recording, or accessed downloaded here.

There was significant demand for this series and we really appreciate your patience as we have been working to get these to you. We recognize from the demand how needed and timely these webinars were.

For now, you can view the recordings with the links included here and you may pass these on to others, but we will be taking lessons learned from this series and repeating the webinars again this fall – we hope to also improve the audio and video quality.

We are committed to providing learning opportunities for workers and agencies across the province seeking to learn more about substance use and harm reduction.

Thanks from the OHSUTP Team.

In response to anecdotal reports of increased methamphetamine use across Ontario, the Ontario Harm Reduction Distribution Program (OHRDP) is now distributing “bowl pipes” to harm reduction programs. Though methamphetamine is not a new drug, many workers have expressed they do not have a good understanding of it, are not sure how the “bowl pipes” are used, might be seeing it for the first time, or are finding it challenging to work with people using meth.

Part 1 - Methamphetamine: The Basics (90 minutes)

  • Examine the history, pharmacology and effects of methamphetamine
  • Discuss how meth is used, the associated injection and inhalation equipment and related best practices, and specifically cover “bowl pipes”, now available to harm reduction programs
  • Explore basic harm and risk reduction strategies

Part 2 - Methamphetamine: Working with and supporting people who use (90 minutes)

  • Learn the signs of overdose and how to respond
  • Examine the sometimes challenging behaviours associated with methamphetamine use and strategies for engaging with people
  • Briefly look at the process and supports for people looking to change their use
  • Learn from one another

These interactive webinars are intended for people working in harm reduction programs and will be particularly useful for Public Health nurses, staff of Needle Syringe Programs (NSPs), Harm Reduction Outreach Workers and Hepatitis C support teams.
